The Pittsburgh Steelers earned a 16-10 victory over the New Orleans Saints at Stade de France on October 25, 2026, claiming the first regular-season NFL win played in France. The result lifted Pittsburgh to 5-2 and left New Orleans at 2-5.

The international setting created a memorable backdrop, but the game was ultimately decided by familiar football problems: an ineffective rushing attack, a costly red-zone turnover and a missed fourth-quarter field goal. Pittsburgh also received three successful kicks from Chris Boswell, while the Saints struggled to finish drives.

Three Plays That Shaped the Result

  • New Orleans could not run the ball. The Saints finished with only 18 rushing yards, forcing quarterback Tyler Shough to throw 38 times.
  • Payton Wilson changed the momentum. The Pittsburgh linebacker intercepted a short pass intended for Chris Olave in the third quarter.
  • Daniel Carlson missed late. The Saints kicker pushed a 52-yard attempt wide right during the final period.

Wilson’s interception came inside the red zone, where New Orleans had been one of the league’s most productive teams before kickoff. Pittsburgh converted the turnover into a 39-yard Boswell field goal, moving ahead 16-10.

Shough accepted responsibility for the mistake, saying the throw needed to be placed farther outside. The turnover became particularly damaging because it ended a possession that could have restored New Orleans’ lead.

Saints Move the Ball Through the Air

Although the ground game collapsed, Shough produced a solid passing performance. He completed 30 of 38 attempts for 278 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

His best moment came late in the second quarter, when he found Devaughn Vele for a one-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal. The score tied the contest at 10-10. Alvin Kamara added seven receptions for 57 yards, giving Shough a reliable outlet throughout the afternoon.

After the final whistle, Shough told teammates that New Orleans had been only a few plays away from winning. That assessment reflected a close game, but the Saints’ inability to produce rushing yards and their red-zone error left little margin for recovery.

Pittsburgh’s Defence Held Firm

The Steelers did not dominate offensively, yet their defence kept New Orleans from turning promising possessions into points. Holding an opponent to 10 points was enough because Pittsburgh consistently found ways to add points with Boswell’s leg.

Linebacker Kaden Elliss praised Shough’s leadership but said the defence still needed more three-and-outs and takeaways. A three-and-out ends a possession without a first down, allowing the defence to return to the sideline after minimal work.

The 16-10 score also showed how little separation existed between the teams. Pittsburgh’s defence did not need a string of spectacular stops; it simply prevented the Saints from finishing enough drives.

A Historic Day at Stade de France

Stade de France hosted the NFL’s first regular-season game in France. The event began at 2:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, October 25, with the stadium positioned in Saint-Denis, just outside central Paris.

The venue, built for the 1998 World Cup, can accommodate more than 80,000 spectators and has hosted major football, Olympic and UEFA events. Its scale made it a natural choice for an international game designed to introduce American football to a broad French audience.

The Steelers also continued a notable overseas run. After winning the NFL’s first regular-season game in Ireland, Pittsburgh became the first team to win regular-season games in both Dublin and Paris.

Why France Matters to the Saints and the NFL

New Orleans entered the game with the NFL’s designated marketing rights in France. The organization has used French-language social media and other outreach efforts to build recognition in a country where American football remains behind several established sports.

Saints owner Gayle Benson was among the visitors who met French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the game and the league’s longer-term ambitions in the country. A strong performance in Paris would have helped New Orleans promote that relationship, but the defeat created more immediate questions about the team’s direction.

Flag football is central to the NFL’s growth plan. The non-contact version of the sport is scheduled to debut at the 2028 Olympics, and league executives view it as a way to introduce new participants and supporters to football. The Saints also support a French tournament whose winners receive a trip to New Orleans.

New Orleans Faces a Longer Review

The Saints now return home with concerns that extend beyond one international loss. Coach Kellen Moore was questioned about the rushing attack and possible changes, while general manager Mickey Loomis had recently asked for patience with a young, developing roster.

Moore said the club would examine every area during its bye week, including the kicking operation. He also said Carlson’s late arrival in Paris, connected to the impending birth of his child, was not responsible for the missed attempt.

New Orleans has not reached the playoffs since the 2020 season. The Paris game offered a valuable stage for the franchise, but the final message was defined by 18 rushing yards, one missed kick and one interception that Pittsburgh turned into the decisive points.
