Manchester United’s crisis has turned the club’s next managerial decision into an urgent issue. Sitting 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation places, United have failed to win in eight consecutive matches. A poor result at Chelsea on Saturday could make Michael Carrick’s position impossible to defend.

Old Trafford Defeat Deepens United’s Problems

Bournemouth delivered another damaging blow on Sunday, October 25, winning 3-0 at Old Trafford. Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored for the visitors as United produced a performance that offered few answers.

  • Bruno Fernandes absent: The captain remained on the substitutes’ bench for the entire match.
  • Eight matches without a win: AFP reports that United’s winless sequence has now reached eight games.
  • Another heavy loss: The result came only four days after a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como.

Fernandes had questioned Carrick’s tactical approach after the Como match, according to AP. Carrick then left him out against Bournemouth, explaining that the decision was based purely on footballing considerations.

The contrast with September is striking. United had beaten Sabah 4-0 and appeared to be enjoying a positive return to the Champions League. That confidence has disappeared quickly during the current run.

League Numbers Explain the Growing Pressure

United’s early-season record has placed Carrick under intense scrutiny. Sports Illustrated reports that the club collected only six points from its opening six Premier League fixtures, making it the weakest start since 1986.

Opta data adds further context: seven points after seven league matches had already represented United’s lowest total at that stage of any Premier League campaign. The team’s current position has therefore become more than a short-term dip in form.

Carrick secured the permanent role after guiding United to third place last season and helping the club return to the Champions League. However, AP notes that he signed the contract only about five months ago, making the rapid change in mood particularly notable.

Some supporters still backed Carrick after the Bournemouth defeat. According to 101 Great Goals, chants supporting the manager continued while criticism was directed towards the board. That reaction suggests many fans believe the club’s wider leadership is also responsible for the collapse.

Conte Rejects Claims of Advanced Negotiations

Antonio Conte has attempted to reduce the speculation surrounding his next job. In an Instagram statement published on October 23, he said he was not involved in advanced negotiations with any club and dismissed reports that he was seeking complete control of football operations.

Conte has been available since Napoli confirmed their mutual agreement to end his tenure on June 4. His first season in Naples ended with a Serie A title, while Napoli finished second in 2025-26.

Despite his clarification, Conte remains an obvious name whenever an elite club needs a new manager. His record includes league championships with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli, making him the only coach reported to have won Serie A with all three clubs.

Why Conte Appeals—and Why He Carries Risk

Conte’s strongest argument is his ability to transform teams quickly. He won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2016-17, his first season in charge, while both Chelsea and Napoli had previously finished 10th before his arrival, according to Goal.

His methods, however, can create a demanding working environment. Yardbarker notes that Juventus was the only club where Conte stayed beyond two seasons; every other managerial spell lasted two seasons or less.

Ashley Young, who worked with Conte at Inter, described lengthy post-match meetings on The Overlap Daily. He said discussions after defeats could continue for three or four hours and characterized some training sessions as “a little bit boring.”

That history makes Conte a potentially powerful short-term solution, but it also raises questions about whether his approach would suit United’s longer-term rebuilding plans.

Who Else Could Replace Carrick?

Conte is not believed to be the leading candidate. The Irish Examiner reports that United recruitment executive Jason Wilcox favours Eddie Howe, who left Newcastle on July 30. Other names linked with the position bring different levels of experience, availability and cost.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes has publicly supported the idea of hiring Conte. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes argued that Conte would bring the authority needed to confront problems inside the squad.

Chelsea Match Could Define the Next Step

Carrick is expected to remain in charge for United’s trip to Chelsea on Saturday. That decision gives him one more opportunity to halt the slide, but it should not be interpreted as a firm endorsement from the board.

United’s supporters have watched the club move through repeated managerial changes while performances deteriorate and decisive action arrives late. Conte could offer an immediate injection of discipline and intensity, whereas Howe or another candidate might better represent a longer-term project.

A defeat at Stamford Bridge would increase the pressure dramatically. The discussion about United’s next manager may then shift from speculation about possible candidates to an immediate decision about Carrick’s future.
