A blockbuster move delivers immediately

Chicago did not need weeks to see the value of its latest defensive addition. Jeffery Simmons made his Bears debut after arriving from Tennessee in a trade involving two first-round picks and quickly became the centrepiece of a 34-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Simmons recorded a sack on Seattle’s opening possession, setting the tone for a defence that consistently disrupted the reigning Super Bowl champions. He finished with six tackles, two tackles for loss, three pressures and a pass defensed, while Chicago held the Seahawks to 252 total yards.

The Bears also controlled third down, allowing Seattle to convert only once in 11 attempts. Coach Ben Johnson described Simmons’ effect as “profound,” and the defensive tackle’s performance gave Chicago an immediate lift on both sides of the ball.

Chicago controls the game from the opening drive

Caleb Williams helped establish the tempo with an efficient first possession. The quarterback guided Chicago through a 17-play, 80-yard march that ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Luther Burden, giving the Bears an early lead they never surrendered.

Williams finished with 247 passing yards, completed 71 per cent of his throws and avoided the mistakes that often allow a strong opponent to regain momentum. He was sacked once and committed no turnovers against one of the league’s toughest defensive units.

Johnson praised Williams for remaining composed while operating an especially demanding game plan. The quarterback’s decision-making kept the offence on schedule and repeatedly placed Chicago in scoring range.

Swift turns scoring chances into touchdowns

D’Andre Swift supplied the finishing touch whenever the Bears reached the red zone. Although Seattle limited him to modest rushing yardage, he scored three short touchdowns that kept Chicago in control.

His first scoring run extended the lead to 20-9 in the third quarter. After Seattle briefly threatened to draw level, Swift found the end zone again late in the fourth quarter, pushing the advantage to 34-17 with 4:41 remaining.

Seattle’s comeback attempt falls short

The Seahawks briefly made the contest competitive in the second half. A forced fumble on Colston Loveland gave Seattle a valuable opportunity, and Sam Darnold responded with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp. A successful two-point conversion cut Chicago’s lead to 20-17.

Seattle could not maintain that pressure. Jason Myers had a 33-yard field-goal attempt blocked early in the fourth quarter, and Darnold later threw an interception that handed the Bears favourable field position. Swift converted the mistake into the touchdown that effectively ended the game.

Darnold completed 17 of 34 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns, but the turnover proved costly. Seattle’s rushing attack was also unable to provide enough support, producing just 81 yards despite the return of Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price and the addition of three-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson.

Defending champions lose ground

The result dropped Seattle to 4-4 and marked its third defeat in four games. It also ended a 30-game stretch, including regular-season and playoff contests, in which the Seahawks had not lost by more than four points. That had been the fourth-longest such run in the Super Bowl era.

Coach Mike Macdonald offered no excuses after the loss, acknowledging that Seattle failed to play with the habits that had carried it through close games. The offensive line must improve quickly, particularly in the running game, to reduce the pressure on Darnold and the receiving corps.

Williams avoids another footwear fine

Williams also made a low-key adjustment before the game. After reportedly receiving approximately $35,000 in fines over the previous two weeks for displaying unauthorized branding, he covered the logo on his Caddix cleats.

For the Seattle game, he wore plain black footwear without a visible logo. Williams explained that the change was intended to reduce distractions during an important week for the team.

Chicago’s victory combined a disciplined passing performance, three Swift touchdowns and an instant defensive impact from Simmons. Seattle remained within striking distance for much of the night, but the Bears’ control at the line of scrimmage and their ability to capitalize on turnovers produced a decisive road win.
